COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a resource center survey of American literature in which literature is used to expose students of various genres, vocabulary, compositions, themes, philosophies, history and techniques that comprise the use of English language in America. Additionally, the readings will be used to motivate the discussion, written and oral expression, and critical analysis of ideas. This course mirrors that of the mainstream with modifications where appropriate. Successful completion of this course will earn the student five credits toward the English requirement for graduation.

RATIONALE
A broad-reaching course which stresses not only the importance of literary elements, strengthening writing skills and improving comprehension but the enjoyment of reading.
GOALS & OBJECTIVES
GOAL 1: The student will understand and apply the knowledge of sounds, letters, and words in written English to become independent and fluent readers, and will read a variety of materials and tests with fluency and comprehension.
Objective 1 : Distinguish between major and minor details.
Objective 2: Recognize characterization, setting, plot, theme, and point of view in fiction.
Objective 3: Recognize sensory details, figurative language, and other literary devices in text.
Objective 4: Compare themes, characters, settings, and ideas across texts or works and produce
evidence of understanding.
Objective 5: Begin to develop and collect materials for a portfolio that reflect possible career
choices.
Objective 6: Monitor reading for understanding by automatically setting a purpose for reading,
making and adjusting predictions, asking essential questions, and relating new
learning to the background experience.
Objective 7: Infer word meanings from learned roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
Objective 8: Clarify word meanings through the use of a word’s definition, example, restatement,
or contrast.
GOAL 2: Students will write in clear, concise, organized language that varies in content and form for different audiences and purposes.
Objective 1: Compose, revise, edit, and publish writing using appropriate word processing
software.
Objective 2: Write multi-paragraph compositions that have clear topic development, logical
organization, effective use of detail, and variety in sentence structure.
Objective 3: Use transition words to reinforce a logical progression of ideas.

o Cell Phones and Chromebooks will only be in use with teacher permission.
o Cell phones and headphones will be placed in a basket on top of Mrs. Timan’s desk at the start of each class period. Failure to do so and if caught using, the cell phone will be sent down to the office. This is your warning.
Class Policies
o All textbooks are to remain in the classroom
o Late assignments will be accepted with a penalty
o It is your responsibility to be on-time to class. Three unexcused tardies results in an absence.
o In the event of an absence, please do the following
