Unit Four: Drama -- Overview
Students will be exposed to drama and theater during the Elizabethan period. Background material concerning Shakespeare and his plays will precede the reading of either Romeo and Juliet or Twelfth Night. This unit will focus on the structure of a Shakespearean tragedy as the tragic heroes rise and fall and/or the elements of Shakespearean comedy. Emphasis will also be placed on close reading analysis to discern themes, make inferences, and explore plot development. Focusing on the relationships between several of the characters in the play, soliloquies, and an analysis of motivations will also allow for the study of characterization. In addition, concentration will be placed on identifying the various forms of Shakespeare’s figurative language employed in the play.
