
Unit One: Overview
Beginnings to 1800
This unit deals with the writings centered on the exploration and early settlement of America. We will begin with some historical background and exploration of the three essential questions. Part I explores various cultures present in early America and and includes several creation myths. In Part II students will discover the Puritan influence on early American culture and read work by authors such as William Bradford, Annde Bradstreet, Jonathan Edwards, and Edward Taylor. Also included in this portion of the unit is The Crucible by Arthur Miller, which explores the behavior of mob mentality as well as the ability of the individual to withstand the pressure of the mob. Students will learn about the elements of drama from this major work. Part III includes literature that derives from the formation of the United States and includes issues from independence and slavery and includes autobiographies, speeches, pamphlets, and historical documents such as The Declaration of Independence. Authors such as Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, and Olaudah Equiano will be included. In addition, one or more nonfiction essays by authors such as Sandra Cisneros will be included.
